Computing
Computing at Corringham Primary School
At Corringham Primary School, we are committed to developing confident, capable learners who can use technology purposefully, safely, and creatively. From our youngest learners in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to our graduating Year 6 pupils, computing plays a vital role in preparing children for life in an increasingly digital world. To support this, we follow the Teach Computing curriculum, a structured and progressive programme that develops pupils’ knowledge and skills across the breadth of the computing curriculum.
Our approach to computing is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time. Children revisit key concepts such as algorithms, programming, data, and digital systems with increasing depth and complexity as they move through the school. This ensures that learning is secure and builds logically from one year group to the next. Alongside developing technical skills, a strong emphasis is placed on digital literacy and online safety, ensuring pupils learn how to use technology responsibly and respectfully.
Key Features of Our Computing Curriculum:
A Structured and Progressive Curriculum: The Teach Computing scheme provides a clear progression from EYFS through to Year 6, ensuring consistency in language, expectations, and teaching approaches across the school.
Computational Thinking: Pupils develop key problem-solving skills, including decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking, which support learning in computing and across the wider curriculum.
Programming and Coding: Children are taught to create and debug simple programs, progressing to more complex programming tasks as they move through the school. This helps pupils understand how digital systems work and how instructions are followed.
Digital Literacy and Online Safety: Online safety is taught regularly and explicitly, helping pupils to understand how to stay safe, behave responsibly, and make informed choices when using technology and the internet.
Using Technology Purposefully: Pupils use a range of digital tools and devices to support learning, creativity, and communication, developing confidence in applying computing skills across different subjects.
How to Help at Home
We recognise that technology is constantly evolving and that children may have access to digital devices both at home and at school. Our computing curriculum focuses not only on developing technical skills but also on helping pupils become safe, responsible users of technology.
Ways you can support your child’s computing learning at home include:
Talk About Online Safety: Discuss how to stay safe online, including keeping personal information private, being respectful to others, and telling a trusted adult if something online makes them feel uncomfortable.
Encourage Problem-Solving: Support your child to think logically and break tasks into steps, whether when using technology or solving everyday problems.
Use Technology Together: Explore age-appropriate apps, games, and websites together, talking about how they work and how technology is used in different contexts.
Balance Screen Time: Encourage a healthy balance between screen time and other activities, helping children develop positive and responsible digital habits.
Across the school, computing is taught using a shared approach and common language. This consistency helps children feel confident as they move through year groups, with familiar routines and expectations supporting progression. Pupils leave Corringham Primary School with the foundational computing skills and digital understanding needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
