Home Learning

If you are supporting your child at home to access learning, you will find everything you need on your child’s class page.  Here you will find a suggested timetable, links to the daily sessions, support on how to access the Zoom lessons and a link to the teachers email should you need to ask a question.

Following the first lockdown we listened to your feedback.  Many parents said how much their child valued the weekly, keep in touch Zooms and others said that they struggled to maintain a routine at home.  With this information, along with other feedback, we now:

** Offer daily Zoom sessions (live lessons) which run alongside the children currently in school.

**Timetable live lessons as carefully as possible to avoid a crossover of teaching should you have siblings at home and need to share devices.

** Classes are also offering 1:1 or small group sessions for child to chat to each other.

** Every class page has a suggested weekly timetable and teachers are thinking creatively to get children learning without the need for technology as much as possible too.

** Each teacher also sends out a weekly email (and often follow ups) so you can keep in touch and ask questions.

If you have technology issues, please contact the school office where we will do our best to support you.  We also have a number of DATA only SIMS available if access to wifi is limited.

OUR CURRICULUM

What the curriculum is designed to do

At Corringham CE Primary School we have designed our curriculum with pupils’ learning at the centre. We recognise that a curriculum has to be broad, balanced and offer pupils opportunities to grow as individuals as well as learners. This is supported and underpinned by our strong Christian ethos and promotion of British Values.

Through a combination of learning techniques, we aim to ensure pupils enjoy learning and feel prepared for life after school. We also intend to offer our pupils new and exciting experiences through extra–curricular activities that are designed to build resilience, confidence and self-esteem.

We recognise that pupils should be challenged in their schooling; learning from failures and celebrating successes. We intend for our curriculum to be empowering, enabling pupils to develop their interpersonal skills, creativity and independence.

How the school intends to deliver the curriculum throughout the school

As mentioned above, we intend to deliver a relevant and challenging curriculum through a variety of methods that are both classroom–based and extra–curricular.

We have adopted the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum to ensure coverage and progression throughout the school journey. Whilst we will ensure that learning objectives are always covered, we may sometimes veer away from our published curriculum topics and instead respond to current, local or worldwide events instead.

We promote equal opportunities to all of our pupils in line with the Equality Act 2010 throughout our practices. Below, we have outlined how we intend to deliver this promise.

Classroom–based learning

Our staff value the different ways in which pupils learn and plan lessons to account for these differences. This includes the use of specific subject days or weeks, giving children the opportunity to work cooperatively across different year groups as well as engaging with the local community. We encourage teachers to make cross-curricular links where possible within their lesson plans, so that pupils can draw upon knowledge from different subjects and understand how each topic plays a part in everyday life.

Teachers use different learning resources to teach core content, e.g. educational videos, guest speakers and ICT lessons. By using different techniques, we ensure pupils are engaged with learning and accommodate those who learn differently to their peers.

The school carries out small group and one-to-one teaching sessions for pupils who require additional support. Teaching staff identify pupils who may benefit from this additional support at the earliest possible opportunity. Support is tailored towards the needs of individual pupils and specialist teaching services are employed when required. It is important to note that these interventions supplement the work of the teacher and do not replace it.

A full list of the topics available to our pupils in each year group can be found on each class web page. These follow a 2-year cycle.

Outdoor Learning Environment

We promote the use of the school’s outdoor environment to support and enrich teaching and learning for both discrete and cross curricular activities where appropriate.

As a school, we are fortunate to have a pond, trim trail, gym equipment, mud kitchen, digging area, growing / garden area, stage and an outdoor learning classroom. All classes have outside learning areas with differing resources. Visits to the village pond, the local church and churchyard all support opportunities for outdoor learning in a range of cross curricular subjects bringing learning to life.

Promoting direct engagement with outdoor learning supports the further development of knowledge and skills along with attitudes and behaviours for the personal and social benefit of children. This subsequently impacts positively on the extended school community and society.  By developing a love of the outdoors we aim to encourage children to have a respect of the environment and cultivate a proactive awareness of environmental issues.

Our outdoor environment encourages skills such as problem solving and negotiating risk which are important for child development. Teachers plan purposeful experiences in the outdoors and these can be a catalyst for powerful and memorable learning.

Extra-curricular activities  (subject to the present COVID restrictions)

We provide a variety of extra-curricular activities for pupils which are designed to enrich their learning experiences through a range of activities such as; after–school clubs, educational trips and visits from the local community.

How the school involves parents, pupils and the local community in curriculum planning and delivery

Our school values the input of its pupils, parents and the local community with regards to the planning and delivery of the curriculum. We believe pupils get a well-rounded education if everyone is involved in shaping it. We regularly canvas pupils and their parents to ascertain their views on the effectiveness of our curriculum, through pupil voice surveys, school council input and parental surveys.  This information is used to inform our practices.

We promote our core Christian values of love, friendship, trust, excellence, determination and respect through collective worship in school, inviting members of the Christian, school and local community to join us. Key Christian celebrations take place in our local church helping us to forge closer links with the wider community.

We also engage with the wider community by inviting local people into the school for events such as coffee mornings and lunches.  Furthermore, we invite members of the community to come into school to share their personal accounts of events such as WWII and the history of our school, helping our children to value the experiences of older generations. We are regularly visited by local people who have interesting careers that are relevant to the lives of our children.

How the curriculum benefits pupils’ learning and personal development

Our curriculum has been designed for a range of learners, providing equal opportunities for all – by doing this, pupils will benefit in the following ways:

  • Learning how to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives, supported by an understanding of our core Christian values
  • Understanding that failure is part of the road to success.
  • Being rewarded for academic successes and celebrating the achievement of others.
  • Being supported with their next stages in education or training and feeling prepared for life after school.
  • Becoming responsible individuals who contribute to community living by acquiring a wealth of knowledge and experience, that will enable them to take an active part in future challenges that face the world.
  • Achieving to the best of their ability.
  • Becoming critical thinkers.
  • Finding a sense of belonging to the school and its community.
  • Learning how to cooperate with their peers and respect one another inside and outside the classroom.

PE

The whole curriculum and basic skills are taught through interesting detailed topics and activities designed to help children develop all aspects of intellectual, social and physical development.

The new National Curriculum came into force in September 2014 and is a planned programme which all children must study consisting of the subjects of English, Mathematics, Art and Design, Computing, Design Technology, Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages (Key Stage 2 only), Music and Physical Education. Each subject area has a series of Programmes of Study which children should experience in order to meet the requirements of their appropriate stage.

Children are encouraged to work in pairs, small groups and as a whole class in an interactive practical way that encourages discussion. Children’s progress across the curriculum is monitored and the school uses a pupil tracking system to monitor progress in reading, writing and maths. Some children may be selected to take part in intervention programmes to support them with their literacy and numeracy.
The school has a specialist facility of 30 laptops and 15 iPads to assist with the teaching and learning of Information and Communication Technology.

The school is partnered with a specialist sports provision, MSP. Their specialist teacher works with all children across the school during the autumn and spring term. They also deliver training in coaching and mentoring to our teaching staff.

Please take a look at the individual class pages to find out more about our curriculum.
