Our Curriculum
Our Curriculum
Curriculum Intent – What our curriculum is designed to do
At Corringham Church of England Primary School, our curriculum is designed with pupils’ learning, wellbeing and personal development at its heart. We believe that a high-quality curriculum must be broad, balanced and ambitious, enabling all pupils to flourish academically, socially and spiritually.
Our curriculum is underpinned by our Christian ethos and the promotion of British Values. We aim to nurture children who are curious, resilient, reflective and respectful, and who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life in modern Britain.
Through a rich combination of teaching approaches and learning experiences, we strive to ensure that pupils:
- Enjoy learning and develop a love of learning
- Build secure knowledge and skills across all subject areas
- Develop confidence, independence and creativity
- Learn from mistakes and celebrate success
- Grow as responsible, compassionate members of their community
We also provide opportunities beyond the classroom, including extra-curricular activities and enrichment experiences, which are designed to build resilience, self-esteem and confidence
Curriculum Implementation – How we deliver the curriculum
We deliver a relevant, engaging and challenging curriculum through a combination of classroom-based teaching, outdoor learning and enrichment opportunities.
We use the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum to support clear progression and coverage of knowledge and skills across the school. While we ensure that all National Curriculum requirements are met, we also allow flexibility within our curriculum to respond to pupils’ interests and to local, national or global events when these enhance learning and understanding.
Equal opportunities are promoted for all pupils in line with the Equality Act 2010, and inclusive practice underpins everything we do.
Classroom-Based Learning
- Teachers carefully plan lessons that take account of the different ways in which pupils learn. Learning opportunities include:
- Discrete subject teaching and cross-curricular learning
- Themed days or weeks
- Opportunities for collaborative learning across year groups
- Engagement with the local community and visitors to school
Teachers make purposeful links between subjects wherever possible so that pupils can deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts. A wide range of resources is used, including educational technology, practical activities, visitors and enrichment experiences.
Targeted small-group and one-to-one support is provided for pupils who require additional help. These interventions are identified early, tailored to individual needs and used to supplement high-quality classroom teaching. Specialist services are accessed when appropriate.
Details of curriculum topics for each year group can be found on the individual class pages. These follow a two-year rolling programme.
Outdoor Learning Environment
We actively promote the use of our outdoor environment to enhance and enrich learning across the curriculum. Our school grounds include a pond, trim trail, gym equipment, mud kitchen, digging area, growing and garden areas, an outdoor library and an outdoor classroom.
Outdoor learning opportunities also include visits to the village pond, the local church and churchyard, supporting learning across a range of subjects and helping to bring learning to life.
Learning outdoors supports pupils’ physical development, problem-solving skills, collaboration and risk awareness. It also encourages respect for the environment and a growing awareness of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Extra-Curricular Activities
We offer a range of extra-curricular activities designed to enrich pupils’ learning and personal development. These may include after-school clubs, educational visits, sporting opportunities and visitors from the local community.
Involving Parents, Pupils and the Community
We value the contribution of pupils, parents and the wider community in shaping and delivering our curriculum. Pupil voice, school council discussions and parental feedback are used regularly to review and improve our curriculum offer.
Our core Christian values of love, friendship, trust, excellence, determination and respect are promoted through collective worship and daily school life. We work closely with our local church and community, celebrating key Christian festivals together and strengthening community links.
We also invite members of the community into school to share experiences, knowledge and expertise, helping pupils to value different perspectives and generations.
