Art and Design

Intent

At Corringham we are artists! We want children to have no limits to what their ambitions are: aspiring to be illustrators, creative directors, photographers or printmakers. Our art and design curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own unique creative language and artistic skills.

Our art curriculum showcases artists that will help to empower our children, demonstrating diversity and opportunity for all. Great artists have been chosen to help show the evolution of art and their contributions to the creativity and wealth of our nation. Within their art lessons, children will have the opportunity to critically analyse and reflect upon the artist's work, make links between artists and understand the contribution of art to different cultures and periods in history.

Our school curriculum encourages children to:

● Explore and confidently use a range of mediums and materials.

● Reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate their own work and that of others.

● Have cultured and curious minds that promote tolerance and differences.

● Develop understanding of colour, line, tone, texture, pattern and their ability to use materials and processes to communicate ideas, feelings and meaning.

● Accurately use a variety of creative vocabulary.

● Draw confidently and adventurously from observation, memory and imaginations.

● Communicate ideas visually and physically, using ideas to tell a clear and full story in 2D or 3D.

● Have an impressive knowledge and understanding of other artists, craft makers and designers.

Implementation

How do we implement our art & design curriculum: We use the Kapow Primary’s revised Art and design scheme of work which aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. The Kapow Art revised scheme of work is designed with five strands that run throughout. These are:

● Generating ideas

● Using sketchbooks

● Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)

● Knowledge of artists

● Evaluating and analysing

Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.

Units in each year group are organised into four core areas which are revisted each year:

● Drawing

● Painting and mixed-media

● Sculpture and 3D

● Craft and design

Impact

During and/after lessons, pupils are assessed through informal assessment techniques: questioning, conferencing, reviewing written work against learning objective/success criteria, short retrieval activities, flashbacks.

At Corringham we ensure that children are able to develop progressive skills and knowledge of the significant chosen artists who have influenced our society. The knowledge that children have gained will enable them to reason with the art and design curriculum at key stage 3 and for life as an adult, where art and design influences so much of daily life and culture.
