Absence

There have been amendments to The Education (Pupil Registration) Regulations
2006 with regards to leave of absence in term time. The Regulations regarding
pupils’ leave of absence changed in September 2013. It used to be the case that the
school could grant a leave of absence for pupil holidays during term time in special
circumstances. As parents know, we discourage this but understand that sometimes
an individual pupil’s circumstances are sufficiently special to authorise the absence.

However, the Regulations have changed and the school is now prevented from
granting any leave of absence except in exceptional circumstances. Family holidays,
reunions, special birthdays and other family events are not considered exceptional
and so we will not be able to grant leave of absence for such events.

Further details of the Regulation Amendment can be found on the Government’s

Department for Education website link:

Requests for holidays in term time will not be authorised unless there are very
exceptional circumstances.

Other absences or lateness will be classified, as Unauthorised Absences and they will
have to be published as part of the school’s annual statistical record and in your
child’s annual report.
